It’s been revealed that Activision is suing developer Double Fine, currently working on finishing up their heavy metal inspired action adventure game, Brütal Legend, to halt the release of the game.
Activision, in the complaint filed last Wednesday (June 3rd), claims that the publisher currently holds a still-valid contract to release Brütal Legend, as opposed to EA Partners who are the new publishing partner for the game.
Additionally, Activision claims that they had previously invested $15 million into the title, after Double Fine didn’t complete the game on time (according to their schedule) and requested $7 million more and an additional nine months to deliver Brütal Legend.
This all came about after Brütal Legend was initially set for a 2008 release through publishing partner, at the time, Activision, before the Activision Blizzard merger that saw the mega-publisher dropping a number of high-profile titles from their release line-up, including 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, Ghostbusters: The Video Game and Brütal Legend, amongst others.
Double Fine was then left to find another publishing partner, which was announced to be EA Partners late last year.
When contacted for a comment on the news that Activision was suing his company, president of Double Fine Tim Schafer told weblog Kotaku:
“Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it,” Schafer said. “Oh great, now Beyonce is going to sue me too.”
Nice.
